Sperm Girl!

Yep, that’s the new name for my wife in these parts today.

Very brave, she was, and the basting was relatively quick and painless (except for the bit where we had to pay). We remembered the nurse that did the deed from my turn in the stirrups and Jay winced a little when she came to call us through – we both recall her as being nervous and not very dextrous. I think she was the one that got the speculum stuck inside me, but we won’t go there. Fortunately for Jay, practise over the intervening years has improved both her technique and her bedside manner.

Does anyone know what a good standard is for a post-thaw count?

We’re both feeling a bit reckless and disbelieving I think. We talked and planned and organised for so long before finally trying for BB that our unseemly dash from, “Shall we..” to 2WW in just over a month seems unreal. Maybe it’s how straights feel when they just turn to one another one random night in bed and say, “What the hell, shall we try and make a baby tonight?”

So now we wait, while we wrestle with the flashbacks and hope for a swifter, happier journey this time round.

  1. I know that the number we were given for the vial that worked was 17 million, with a progression between 2 and 3. Good luck with the wait (and the outcome!)

I will forever have nightmares about stuck speculums now, eeek! I’m, glad it went well and I think jumping in may be a good thing, less time to get all worked up and nervous. Sending my best thoughts to you and Sperm Girl šŸ™‚ LOTS OF LUCK!!!!!!!

  3. Wouldn’t it be so incredibly cool if this were the ONLY basting that Jay had to go through? I’ve heard it can work on the first try, and I’d love to hear that it happened for you two.

Unluckily, it’s only the fertile straights who get knocked up after a roll in the hay. I’d love for it to be that easy for everyone who wants so much to become parents- gay, straight, or otherwise.

    Good luck!

  4. *Almost* like when straight couples hop into bed.

Good luck during the wait – this is most exciting.

In terms of counts – excellent is over 20mil, good is over 10mil, 8-10 is pushing it and under 8mil is considered poor by anyone except our old RE who thought 5, 4, and 2million where just fine. Our current samples at the good clinic get a little spa treatment which makes the post-thaw count better somehow and we’re generally getting around 25mil, give or take (not that it’s done a lick of good).

I like the idea of feeling reckless about this; it has to feel a little freeing, and I hope that this recklessness of yours results in an “I can’t believe we got pregnant on the first try!” experience because that would be really fabulous. I hope the TWW goes by quickly! xo

  6. I’m hoping that it happens in just the right timing for your family. You’ve put in your time on the challenging end of things, and you’re due for some ease, right?

Good luck. Thinking good thoughts for you all!

Congrats. The first answer to the sperm count question is that whatever count you had is sufficient to get y’all pregnant. No reason to spend the next 2 weeks worrying if your number was lower than we know it alls on the interweb say it should be. Even people with low sperm counts get people pregnant.

With respect to the ideal numbers, I think it depends on whether it’s pre or post sperm wash. For Post-thaw but pre- sperm wash over 15m is good though you’d love to see it over 20mil. If it’s post-thaw and post sperm wash over 10m is perfect a little less is fine.

I think the number clinics usually give is the pre-wash number because most places don’t do a count post wash but i ask for it cause i’m super curious.

All limbs are crossed for you. Some friends of ours are in the same situation as you i.e. one birthed the 1st child and the other one just got pregnant on the 1st try for number 2. So, I wish that for you.

Our kid is 16mths and we are in the 2ww on our try for number 2 (me again. It didn’t work out when we tried with my partner the 1st time around). Hopefully we’ll all have lots of reasons to celebrate soon enough.

  8. May this be the last TWW!! Good luck mums!

  9. Swim, boys, swim!

  10. Thinking lots of positive good luck wishes for you both!!

  11. Can you even imagine the whiplash of a first cycle BFP?! It would be like seeing a unicorn. Ha ha! It sure would be awesome to have that happen to one of our own. Lots of luck sent your way, ladies (and gent)!
